Prime Minister Narendra Modi has remarked that yoga’s beauty is in its simplicity. In a tweet, Mr. Modi said that yoga can be done at home, during work breaks, or in a group. He added that for yoga, all one needs is a yoga mat and some empty space. PM Modi hoped that people would practice yoga regularly.

PM Modi says the beauty of yoga is in its simplicityYoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131. COVID-19 has been a human tragedy unlike anything else. As well as affecting physical health, the pandemic exacerbated psychological suffering, including depression and anxiety, as pandemic-related restrictions were implemented in many countries.

The mental health aspect of the pandemic must be addressed urgently in addition to the physical aspect. People around the world turned to yoga during the pandemic to stay healthy and rejuvenated. Yoga is also providing psychosocial support and rehabilitation to COVID-19 patients in quarantine and isolation. It is particularly useful for calming anxiety and fears.

Along with causing suffering to humans, the COVID-19 pandemic has also exposed several key vulnerabilities in the economic and development models of many countries. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, member states must rebuild differently in order to prosper in the future.

Balance is at the heart of yoga – not just the balance within and between the body and the mind, but also the balance in the human relationship with the world. The yoga practice emphasizes the values of mindfulness, moderation, discipline, and perseverance. Through its application to communities and societies, yoga provides a way to live sustainably.
