Defence Minister Rajnath Singh felicitates 1971 war veterans in Assam

Over 300 war veterans of Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War were honored by the Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday. The government of Assam organized a felicitation ceremony in Guwahati for war veterans including women liberation war fighters and Veer Naris. One of those present was Lt. Col Quazi Sajjad Ali Zahir (Retd), a Bangladeshi war veteran of 1971 and recipient of the Padma Shri award.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh felicitates 1971 war veterans in AssamDuring his address, Mr Singh, the Minister of Defence, spoke about the veterans who are important assets to the nation and are an inspiration to each and every Indian. In appreciation of the Government of Assam for felicitating the veterans, he stated that the event is a unique expression of respect not only for the Armed Forces, but also for the country’s democratic values.

The Indian defence minister said that the 1971 war provided India with a strategic advantage since there was never tension on the Indo-Bangladesh border as there was on the western front since Bangladesh has always been India’s friendly neighbor. The Defence Minister released a book on the occasion entitled The Bravehearts of 1971. During the felicitation ceremony, Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi and Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma were present.
